IQOS ILUMA devices compared

IQOS ILUMA, ILUMA PRIME, ILUMA ONE and the ILUMA i models use the same basic induction heating system, but they differ in shape, charging and price. The standard ILUMA is a two-part device: a holder and a pocket charger. PRIME uses the same heating technology and performance in different housing. ONE puts the holder and battery into one body, so there is no pocket charger.

All ILUMA devices in this guide work with TEREA, DELIA and LEVIA sticks only. They do not take HEETS, and no ILUMA stick fits glo, Ploom or lil devices. The main buying decision is therefore straightforward: choose the two-part format for a replaceable holder, PRIME for its housing, or ONE for a single object you charge by cable.

How does IQOS ILUMA induction heating work?

IQOS ILUMA heats the stick by induction. A metal susceptor is inside the stick itself, and the device has no blade. The holder applies heat to that susceptor rather than inserting a blade into the tobacco.

That design explains the main maintenance difference from older blade-based IQOS devices. There is no blade inside the ILUMA holder to break, and there is no burnt residue carried between sticks in the holder. It also means the stick format is specific: TEREA and other ILUMA-compatible sticks are made for this induction system.

ILUMA replaced HEETS with TEREA when the platform arrived. HEETS and TEREA are not interchangeable. A blade-based IQOS 3 DUO or older IQOS device will not use the same stick system as ILUMA.

Induction does not make the product risk free. Heated-tobacco and nicotine products are for adults 18+ only. Where a warning is needed: “This product is not risk free and contains nicotine, which is addictive.”

What is the difference between ILUMA, PRIME, ONE and ILUMA i?

The practical difference is not the basic heating method. Standard ILUMA and PRIME are two-part devices, while ONE is a single body. The ILUMA i models are the current generation across those formats. Product listings for ILUMA i include touchscreen and pause mode on the standard ILUMA i, while ILUMA i ONE listings describe an all-in-one body with auto-start and flexpuff. ILUMA i PRIME listings describe a touchscreen, flexpuff and selectable battery modes.

These model features do not change which sticks fit. ILUMA, PRIME, ONE and ILUMA i devices use the ILUMA stick format.

Is ILUMA PRIME worth the extra cost?

Choose ILUMA PRIME for its housing, not for different heating. It uses the same induction system as standard ILUMA, with the same performance. The extra cost pays for the body: a textured sleeve and an open cradle instead of a sliding door.

That housing does not change how the stick tastes. PRIME is therefore a straightforward trade-off. If you want the PRIME body, the price range is EUR 110-140. If you only need the ILUMA heating system, standard ILUMA costs less: EUR 45 for a holder, approximately EUR 45 for a pocket charger, or EUR 90 for a kit.

The current stock also includes ILUMA i PRIME models such as Breeze Blue, Electric Purple, Garnet Red and Midnight Black. Their listing describes the current ILUMA generation and its touchscreen, flexpuff and selectable battery modes. The colour and finish are separate from the fundamental compatibility question: these devices still take TEREA, DELIA and LEVIA.

For a buyer focused on function per euro, standard ILUMA is the more defensible choice. PRIME is not worth the extra cost if you expect stronger heating or a different stick experience.

Should I buy ILUMA ONE instead?

ILUMA ONE is the better fit if you want one object rather than a holder and a pocket charger. Its battery lives in the body you draw on, and it charges by cable. There is no separate pocket charger to carry or replace.

The trade-off is simple: when the ONE battery is empty, you stop until the device can be charged. With the standard two-part ILUMA system, the holder is topped up between uses by the pocket charger. The holder is also the part you draw on and the part that wears out first, so a separate holder can be replaced without buying the whole two-part system again.

The stock includes ILUMA i ONE models in Breeze Blue, Digital Violet, Electric Purple, Midnight Black and Vivid Terracotta, as well as ILUMA ONE kits in five colours. The i ONE listings describe auto-start and flexpuff, while the basic ONE kit listings focus on the holder and battery being in one body.

Use the iqos-iluma-one category if the all-in-one format is the deciding factor. It is not a cheaper version of a two-part kit in every practical respect; it is a different ownership trade-off.

Holder, pocket charger or kit: what should I buy?

Buy a holder if the part you draw on has stopped working or has been lost, while your pocket charger still charges normally. Standard ILUMA holders are listed at EUR 45. The holder is the part that wears out first because it is used for every session.

Buy a pocket charger if the holder works but the charger no longer tops it up, or if you have a spare holder without its charger. Standard ILUMA pocket chargers are listed at approximately EUR 45. The charger is not the part you draw on.

Buy a kit if you need both parts, are replacing the complete standard system, or do not currently own an ILUMA device. A standard ILUMA kit is EUR 90. The kit includes the holder and pocket charger. Colours include Azure Blue, Moss Green, Pebble Beige, Pebble Grey and Sunset Red.

For PRIME, the same decision applies: the store lists holders, pocket chargers and kits separately in the PRIME range. For ONE, look for a kit or all-in-one unit because the holder and battery are combined in one body. Which sticks work with IQOS ILUMA?

IQOS ILUMA devices work with three lines in this catalogue: TEREA, DELIA and LEVIA. All three are made for the IQOS ILUMA series, including ILUMA, ILUMA PRIME, ILUMA ONE and the ILUMA i models.

What will ILUMA never take?

ILUMA will not take HEETS. HEETS were used with older blade-based IQOS devices, while TEREA was introduced for ILUMA. The two formats are not interchangeable.

ILUMA sticks also do not fit glo, Ploom or lil devices. IQOS, glo, Ploom and lil use different stick formats, so forcing another brand’s stick into the holder is not a compatibility solution. The reverse is also true: glo, Ploom and lil sticks are not ILUMA sticks.

Older IQOS 3 DUO and other blade-based IQOS devices are not compatible with the ILUMA stick system. ILUMA uses induction and has no blade; older devices use a heated blade. Check the device platform before ordering sticks. A lower price on a carton is irrelevant if the format cannot be used with your device.

Cleaning and maintenance

ILUMA does not have a blade inside the holder, so there is no blade to clean or replace. The induction design also means there is no burnt residue carried between sticks in the holder. That removes one maintenance issue found with older blade-based IQOS devices.

It does not mean every device problem disappears. A holder, pocket charger or cable can still be the part that needs replacing, and the standard holder is the component that wears out first. With ONE, the battery and holder are in the same body, so a battery issue affects the complete device rather than a separate holder.
